DDR Speisegaststatte Pila in Berlin

I give this restaurant 1 star! I have rarely eaten so badly. Not even in the east. Dirt everywhere, no paper on the toilet, although the restaurant has only just opened. I couldn't even dry my hands after washing my hands. And that in Corona times. Dead flies in abundance on the windowsill behind the bench. The waitress was pretty naughty, although she certainly didn't mean it badly. This is really not recommended.

Delicious food, good prices, friendly service

You seldom find such an authentic, familiar atmosphere in Berlin. If you feel comfortable with something like this, then this is the place for you. The beer is good, the food comes in large portions and they're kid-friendly too. it is a pity that they are moving soon.

Just for fun or back to the future, we enjoyed reviewing the old days, and with original dishes that tasted very good. Good luck with the move, then we will definitely come by again. Thanks to Nico and the cook!

Great food in an old GDR ambience up to the HO restaurant aluminum cutlery. Pure Ostalgia. The selection on the menu as it was known in many GDR restaurants over 30 years ago. Loving attempt not to allow the GDR cuisine to be forgotten. No fancy dress. Very nice and attentive service. Many pieces of inspiration collected for viewing with a lot of diligence. Only the bill had to be paid in euros and in cash. Card payments were also not possible in the GDR. A visit is definitely worth it. The GDR had more to offer than just Stasi, Wall and Erich Honecker, also great music and tasty food. Many thanks to the team for a fantastic evening. Always happy. From 01.12.2020 in a new location. Interesting experience. Like a little time travel. Everything seems authentic, the food, the decor, even the staff;) Delicious and generous portions. Gladly again.

Were eating there yesterday ... The service was very nice and fully responded to our requests! Great atmosphere - it was like traveling back in time to my childhood / youth .. Highlight - the aluminum cutlery !!! 😅

There are two stars for fast and hot delivery. 3-4 stars for the Wiener Schnitzel, but you can't go wrong with that either. To pretend to be a GDR specialty restaurant is a cheek. Frozen vegetables from Edeka and this and the potatoes were just too salty. Mixed vegetables aren't just made of flour water, which was also completely about salts. The meatloaf itself and the sauce were again good. But do you only want to eat meat and sauce? The sauce by itself was pure Maggie sauce. That's why it stays with two stars. In my opinion, my grandmother would be extremely upset about this food and not refer to it as East German food.

A great restaurant with a great menu from the old GDR times. It tastes just like it used to. A big compliment to the cook. I haven't eaten that good in a long time. Huge portions for a small price. If I visit Berlin again, I will be very happy to come back. Unfortunately the restaurant is moving and I don't know the new address yet.

Food is great. The charm of the restaurant is simply unbelievably beautiful and definitely nostalgic for older Easter people :)

You shouldn't expect gourmet cuisine, but you can expect lots of dishes from the GDR school canteen. The portions, especially the schnitzel, are more than sufficient, tasty and inexpensive! Together with the great decoration and the funny staff it is a nice time travel ...

We waited over an hour for our food and then got the wrong food once. The taste was okay, but not a highlight. We would not go there again.

We went to eat there with a Groupon voucher. The menus were very tasty and really like back then, even with aluminum cutlery. The food came very quickly and the service was friendly and quick. Inside the restaurant you can visit a small GDR museum. We'll be back there.

Very dirty place. During the lockdown, you could have cleaned every corner. The time was probably there and it would have been good for the place. Our service was a little too pushy and indiscreet. When it comes to food, the price-performance ratio is absolutely not right. Absolutely not recommendable!

Delicious East German food with fantastic service - we enjoyed every second!

Somehow a little journey through time ... you shouldn't think about all aspects of the GDR here, but enjoy the good things. The ambience is great, really a small, authentic museum down to the last detail (including dishes, glasses and cutlery), the food and the service are first class! Haven't eaten such a good roulade with dumplings for a long time, the schnitzel and the dessert plate are great too ... For me it will always be a must when visiting Berlin.

We came across this place on trip advisor and we were looking for something a little different. We were greeted with very friendly staff who took the time to fully explain things on the menu. Our meal was fantastic the hawiian schnitzel was huge and delicious as was the Hawaiian steak. The garlic sauce was amazing too. A wide range of traditional dishes are on offer here. The surroundings are so interesting and on show are original artefacts from the DDR era.

Good collection of DDR objects, menu as expected, very east German!

We tried a nice selection of DDR inspired food. Hope people understand that this means that it probably won't be the best food you try in Berlin, but combined with the atmosphere and memorabilia on display it is a great experience.

Great for DDR collection but the food was mediocre and the beer was watery. I remember better beer in the old DDR.

I little bit weird soviet place

If you want to feel a bit of GDR gastronomy, coupled with the charm of the wait staff, you are exactly right. Of course, it does not taste the same as 'back then', but in some dishes they are really close. All of us, 12 people, really enjoyed it. The portions were also neat, all are full. Price-performance ratio is so completely. The service is in places a decent Kodderschnauze to the day, which bring some here. Guys, that was the way it was then. I never found it offensive, rather funny, and always friendly. Amazing, since probably none of the ladies has ever really experienced. We had a nice and fun evening, thanks to everyone there.

Nothing special without the location and the souvenirs about the former DDR.

Cool restaurant with interesting memorabilia. Reservations are needed because it can get busy. This is not your typical gentrified restaurant from Prenzlauer Berg so practice your german before going there [you should do this anyway if you live in Berlin ;)] Service is friendly in a Berliner way so don’t expect fake smiles.

The place is interesting. However, food is not nice - taste somehow like fast food.

Pila is an interesting restaurant that brings you back to the DDR times; Fully decorared with memorabilia from socialist Germany and traditional food. They also have a show where classical songs are played, and an old style lottery. I recommend this place for Germans that want to experience again the DDR, or for tourists trying to understand the traces from the past.

Made a reservation a day in advance, arrived at a half-empty restaurant with a staff member telling me they had nothing noted in their reservations even though I showed two confirmation emails. Wouldn't be a problem weren't it for the fact that she was incredibly, almost agressively rude to us. Would not recommend unless you want to be yelled at by an angry German woman.

DDR style restaurant. The maid comes to take orders with the party youth shirt. Style aside, very kind and caring person. Typical German food and very few vegetarian variations. Nice place. I was impressed and liked the very intimate flavor. To come back

You fee like you are in the GDR inner circle when you eat here. Food was and atmosphere was great. Highly recommend "kalter Hund"

Nice restaurant. The topic is about the GDR. The food was good and received a good service. They don't really speak english but they will make all their possible to answer to all your question (German menu). Many things from the GDR are there. Cash only.

Ostalgie pur

Cozy restaurant with friendly service. The food was very authentic and freshly prepared for a real Ossi. You feel a little transported back in time. Deduction for the waiting time for the main course. If you are looking for something extraordinary, you will find it here.

The food was simple, but delicious, and very fairly priced. The atmosphere is 100% DDR. We will be back 😊

Went here with a big group of friends. Everyone loved it. Food was great. Good beer and huge glasses! And the staff was very fun and friendly. Not a typical restaurant but had a good vibe and is something different. Would definitely recommend.

Pila Is only a small restaurant, with one young blonde lady waiting the tables when we visited, we were the only English people in, everyone else was German and presumably local, the restaurant was busy and our waitress did a fantastic job, she checked that everything was OK with our meal atleast three times, offering us drinks, I ordered the currywurst off the menu, it was delicious, my friend ordered a schnitzel and it was enormous. Food was good, drinks were reasonably priced, table service from our waitress was excellent, I would highly recommend visiting here!

Decor: This restaurant had lots of character and interesting memorabilia. It wasn't decorated to an impeccable standard but it was quaint for a small establishment. Food: I ordered the Steak Hawai (Pork Steak with pineapple and cheese topping, served with chips and a creamy mushroom sauce) it was delicious. Price: Extremely reasonable for the quality of food. Highly recommend this place. ££ Customer service: The blonde waitress ran the floor in a military operation style, everybody was attended to and she remained polite, professional and courteous. Although we did not speak Dutch she spoke English very well and wished us to "have a nice evening, a nice holiday and a nice time" it was one of the best positive customer experiences I've had in a long time. Location: Close to the Hotel Pension Reiter where I was staying. A short and straight 10 minute walk next to a park.

Beste experience ever: I was here last oktober 2014. First of all my nephew and I found the restaurant a bit chaotic. We were almost about to leave because we had to wait long to be served. But after that minor issue we where served like kings. Its not really a restaurant where you only come to be served and eat well. It's a restaurant where i felt very at home and treated in a honest way. For me it was an experience never to forget. The food was very good and also very much. And the prices where more then fair. With a little patience this was the best experience in a restaurant. Me and my nephew are still talking about this restaurant when we meet up. This year i'm comming back to Berlin. I'm definitely going back to this restaurant.

Very, very nice place. Despite a prior review claiming that forringers Would get bad service we decided to try Pila. We got the best service, in english, loved the authentic german food and the nice beer at a very fair price. Lots to choose between on the menu card and a very relaxed atmosphere. You clearly get the impression that locals meet here, never the less we felt very welcome We will be back.

A bit hidden in a side street, PILA is a good example of a restaurant with a touch of GDR cousine. Besides the food or good choice of beers you can enjoy the interesting samples (some of them very rare) of a vanished German state (it's not a must, but I'd recommend to ask for a look into the function room!). Beer garden at the front.
